Münzer was raised as a Catholic but converted to Protestantism in 1548. In 1873, his remains were moved to the crypt of the Strasbourg Cathedral, where they have been placed in a different tomb from that of his other martyrs, with a crucifix, a copy of his Testaments, and an inscription reading “In Memoriam Karl Münzer, martyred November 15, 1563,” according to the shrine of the Strasbourg Cathedral. In 1803, Napoleon ordered Münzer’s body to be exhumed and moved to a charnel house, where it remained for nearly 50 years. In 1790, his remains were moved to the crypt of the nearby Strasbourg Cathedral, where they were buried in a crypt added to the tomb of other saints.
